Write to a friend
Let's spread the word that there is a way to fight
back against the special interests' big money taking over our
government.
Write a letter to the editor
The "letters-to-the-editor" page is a great place to
educate the public about our cause, being a widely-read part of
any newspaper. Also, letters help the editors decide which topics
to cover in future news stories or editorials, and elected officials
monitor this section, along with the editorial page, to gauge
local opinion.
Find your newspaper and contact info
Getting your letter published:
Check the newspaper's guidelines. They may prefer that a letter
be emailed, require a phone number so they can confirm your identity,
and have a word limit. So keep it short, unless you know that
the editor will print a longer version.
Although not required, it's a good
idea to address the letter to recent news story, another letter
in a previous edition, or an event in your area.
Our News
page features letters that have been published.
Online
posts: Some newspapers have comments enabled for their
online articles. Commenters can respond to the article and also
to previous commenters' posts. Remarks dismissing public campaigns
can quickly be rebutted. Be respectful —
no flaming!
Write an op-ed article for
your newspaper
Newspapers provide a space, often opposite the editorial page
(hence the name) for persons not associated with the newspaper
to express their opinions. Newspapers have limits to the length
of such an article (usually in the neighborhood of 600 words)
so check with them before submitting your article.
Write a blog entry
It would promote our cause to have discussions about public financing
in local blogs. Here is a sample
of one entry.
