WashClean Digest
August 15, 2007

Hello, WashClean Supporters!

Are you fed up yet? - with the arms race in campaign cash?
One sarcastic bumper sticker reads:
"Be Patriotic: Buy a Congressman!"

Public funding of campaigns (a.k.a. Clean Campaigns) is essential, and the most important change we can fight for. We can do it here but it requires robust statewide organizing and YOUR support!

CONTENTS of this WPC Digest

  • Join us in the streets, Primary Day August 21st
  • NEWS around the states: New Jersey, North Carolina, Alaska
  • Local chapters and Meet-Ups
  • MEET your legislators
  • Statewide gathering - October 20th
  • TELL a friend about WPC!

PRIMARY DAY: JOIN US IN THE STREETS!
Help spread the word of our work for Clean Campaigns. On Primary Day August 21st, WashClean volunteers will be waving signs, advertising our website. Contact your local WPC chapter, or Craig@washclean.org, or Marcee@washclean.org.
Create your own sign, and hit the streets! Suggested slogans:
"Let's have PUBLICLY funded campaigns! WashClean.org"
Or maybe
"Elections about VOTES, not $$ WashClean.org"
The point is to advertise our website.

NEWS around the states
Some states are meeting success using an incremental approach:
New Jersey has approved a program, to "pilot" Clean Campaigns in three legislative districts. When this proves successful, it will spread to the rest of the state. njcitizenaction.org/cfr.html

North Carolina has expanded public financing for judicial races, to include three state offices: Insurance Commissioner, State Auditor, and Superintendent of Public Instruction. www.ncvce.org

Alaska: With voter anger over corruption at an all-time high, a ballot initiative has qualified, to establish an Alaska Clean Elections Act. elections.state.ak.us/petitions/status.php (then read #07Case). Or, alaskansforcleanelections.org

LOCAL CHAPTERS and Meet-Ups
WashClean supporters are organizing local chapters all over the state.
See a list on our website: washclean.org/localchapters.htm

WashClean MEET-UPs: A great way to meet and get involved in a relaxed social setting.

See the WPC Calendar, my.calendars.net/wpcevents
Upcoming Meet-Ups are: August 19th (SW King Co.), August 23 (Seattle, and Bellingham), August 30th (Bellevue/Eastside).

To establish new local chapters or Meet-Ups, contact us we'll help you get organized! craig@washclean.org

MEET YOUR LEGISLATORS!
Our success depends on grassroots citizen lobbying! So, we want WashCleaners in every local area to set up a group meeting with your local legislators, by the end of October (or sooner). Arrange this through a local chapter meeting, and let us help you.

When a delegation meets with legislators, show them the public support, gathered through hundreds of local Citizens' Petition signers. Thank them if they support us - or urge them to reconsider if they don't. Urge them to learn all they can about public financiang of campaigns and to sign the Candidates Pledge. Remind them: the public supports it, and it means no more 'dialing for dollars'!

STATEWIDE GATHERING, October 20th
Mark your calendar: October 20th, for our next statewide gathering, where local chapter representatives and supporters from all around will gather for a review of our outreach work, final planning for citizen lobbying of the January 2008 legislative session, consideration of a Voter Initiative effort, and more. Details, including location, time and agenda, will be announced in September.
