June 15, 2007    Guest Speaker: David Donnelly of the national Clean Campaigns movement.

WPC's 2007 Awards Banquet was a tremendous success!

The Awards Banquet celebrated our clean campaigns community, heaped praise upon deserving efforts, and reinforced our motivation to continue on the road to a government of, by, and for the people.

If we want success in bringing publicly funded campaigns to Washington State, we should consider how to best work with the powerful groups that will be affected. They include business leaders and legislators themselves. That may have been the central message of David Donnelly's keynote address at our first Annual Awards Banquet at the Brockey Center, South Seattle Community College.

Donnelly(right) is co-author of Are Elections for Sale? and Public Campaign Action Fund's National Campaigns Director. PCA holds elected officials accountable for the special favors they do for their political contributors. He also managed two successful "Clean Elections" initiative campaigns in Maine and in Arizona.

David made a point of reminding us how small a percentage of U.S. citizens participate in the electoral process. Of that percentage, far fewer contribute sizeable sums to the candidate of their choice. Those big donors are typically white, affluent, business-oriented, and more conservative than average and of course they have more clout.
